Urgent Appeal from NESSL for Lifesaving Emergency Response to Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon

Our mission network received an urgent appeal on September 25, 2024 from the Rev. Joseph Kassab, General Secretary of the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon (NESSL). Compassion Protestant Society (CPS), NESSL’s diaconal arm, is seeking financial support for a 6-month project to provide critical lifesaving support to people in Lebanon who have been displaced as a result of Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in South Lebanon and Beqaa.

Aid will be provided to families displaced by the conflict, particularly families whose homes have been destroyed. The focus will be on ensuring access to safe and dignified shelter, essential life-sustaining assistance, and education and psychosocial support for children. In response to the tragic events of September 23, NESSL opened the Zahle Evangelical Center to host displaced individuals, and they are preparing a comprehensive intervention to address both immediate and future needs. NESSL urgently seeks continued support from their partners to sustain this essential aid and provide long-term relief those affected by this crisis.

Rev Kassab writes: “Christian churches and NGOs are called to be vessels for God’s mission and reconciliation, to act and serve among those fragile families. The crucified Christ is embracing the pain of war-affect people from all parties and backgrounds. It is a time to cre with love and compassion. Waiting for sanity to prevail, we will do good in the name of Christ.”

UPDATE FROM COMPASSIONATE PROTESTANT SOCIETY

Amir Bitar, the Executive Director of Compassionate Protestant Society (CPS) shared an update on the situation in Lebanon as thousands evacuate from the south. The Learning Center in Tyre for Syrian children is now closed as all have evacuated. CPS continues to provide basic necessities as Lebanon continues to experience life threatening situations in various parts of the country. The update is dated October 19. The numbers of people affected have changed by now, but the report gives you a good idea of the impact and need. Click here to read the update.
